Ham in a Day Class
By Jordan, KC9PXM on Mar 02, 2025
Ham Radio!
Why? Simply put: Ham Radio Works! Most of the time, things work fine. But despite the development of very complex systems – or maybe because they ARE so complex – Ham radio has been called into action again and again to provide communication when it really matters.
Why Ham Radio Works So Well. Telephones, cell phones, Internet, trunk lines, police/fire/EMS radio and even satellite phones have limitations. To get the message out they have to go through many vulnerable choke points and they all need electric power and in some cases the Internet. Even if these systems are functioning, they can be overwhelmed by the number of cries for help and families seeking information.
How do I get started? The first step is getting your F.C C. technicians license from the Federal Communications Commission (F.C.C.) This license allows you to communicate on the most popular Ham radio frequencies.
You can use these to communicate around the city, the county, the state, the country, around the world and even off our planet to the astronauts on the International Space Station! You can keep in touch with your family and friends when it really matters!
Wow, sounds great. How long does it take: Years, months? Surprisingly, No. You can get your license in a single day with WARS (Wichita Falls Amature Radio Society's Ham-in-A-day Study session.
What Does It Cost?
The WARS) Ham-In-A-Day license study session is free. The study guide is free. The F.C. testing fees cost $15 to $30 cash Only.
The F.C.C. charges $35 for a 10-year license. once you pass. They will bill you via email. You can pay the license fee by credit or debit card.
What about the equipment? A very basic handheld radio can be purchased for under $40.
